Information for Competitors
The 4th running of the Glen Affric duathlon will take place on Sunday April 22nd 2007. Again a leisurely start time of 11:00 has been adopted, to allow time for any early morning mist to be burnt away by the midday sun.
Race details – please see link below for map of the course.
RUN 1 – 7.5 MILES.
Starts off gentle along tarmac, before ascending a wide, very stony hill track. As you reach the hill valley directly below the mountains, the going turns to bog, in places very heavy bog, maybe knee deep if you stray a bit. This lasts for approx 1.5 miles, during which you cross 2 or 3 hill byrnes, which tumble over slippery rock. Please tread carefully. At the end of the boggy section, you are faced with a knee/ waste deep river crossing. Mountain rescue will provide a rope to hold on to if needed. Once across the other side, you ascend Am Meallan to 1500 ft above sea level on good hill track, descending on very rough stony track back to transition.
CYCLE – 18 MILES. The first 5 miles is all on tarmac road. The road is open, so care to be taken as per normal highway code rules. At Dog Falls, you get on wide forestry track back to transition. The cycle has 2 good ascents and some speedy descents. It is not a technical course, but is a rough, wide track that runs through some very special pine woodland. Please remember to be wary of the rough track.
RUN 2 – 2.5 MILES. Very picturesque run around the River Affric forest walk. Half on tarmac, and half X-country. It undulates a bit, with parts on slippery rock. Please don’t run in cleats, as you’ll regret it.
