2009 Glen Affric Duathlon Results
To all competitors and marshalls Thankyou all very much for entering and/or helping with the sixth and final Glen Affric Duathlon. It is very much appreciated. Congratulations to all for at least starting the event, and especially to all prize winners. I started the event to put something back into a sport I enjoyed immensely throughout the 90s and because I am the owner of the campsite in Cannich, to provide some business for accomodation providers and service providers in the area. It has been good to meet athletes both locally and from afar and to provide a challenging course to blast yourselves on. The only real complaint I had in 6 years was when I upped the price from £15 to £17 three years ago, so that's pretty good (can't imagine what £20 would have felt like). Because we are a non-profit making event, that complaint has really, really irked me, and my hope is that that person has had the guts to organise an event themselves and see what it is like to volunteer their time to put something back into their sport. I would like to note a big thanks to marshalls and helpers on the day (approx 75 including kids on the feed station – a ratio of 1 helper to every 2 competitors) who nearly all come from the community and have supported me each year. Also a big thankyou to “Forestry Commission Scotland”, “Fionnar Natural Mineral Water” and “Square Wheels” in Strathpeffer. If you pass on any comments to me about the race, I will pass them on to these organisations, in the hope that they are keen to support other similar community events in the future. On that note I must say a big thankyou to all those who have passed on kind comments about the event over the years, as I wanted to provide a low-key alternative to big professionally organised events. The following from Mark Wood in 2008 was as good as it gets:- “Guys, first of all I just want to say what a well organised event the Duathlon was. I do a lot of events particularly adventure races, Rat Race etc but you rarely come across an event so well organised. Or at least it looked that way from the outside! It was also good to see the way the community came out and supported the event, I've never seen so many marshals at an event. Please pass on my thanks to all the helpers, marshals, organisers and sponsors. “ Thanks very much for supporting the event over the last 6years!
